CSPs see autonomous operations providing a competitive advantage

A new TM Forum global survey of communications service providers’ (CSPs) attitudes to deploying autonomous operations (AO) has revealed that fully 88% of those who responded see AO as providing their companies with a competitive advantage.

TM Forum conducted the survey for its latest report on its autonomous operations maturity model (AOMM). Questions cover the role of AO in delivering strategic business goals, as well as the tools, methodologies and skills CSPs are putting in place to enable increasingly autonomous operations.

The answers, for example, reveal investments in building AO teams, and the use of new technologies. Fully 54% of survey participants report that their companies have dedicated team(s) and resources to drive innovation in autonomous operations.

And while more than 70% of respondents use machine learning for pattern recognition, event risk and process prediction, there is also a growing embrace of Generative AI: More than 50% of those surveyed say they are planning to develop GenAI for ChatOps and co-pilot applications as they accelerate towards higher autonomy.

The survey also looked at how AO is enabling network operation. Here, nearly 80% of CSPs surveyed reported AO has benefited network monitoring fault prevention, followed closely by network monitoring - performance and quality monitoring.

Data was another important focus of the survey. When it came to data models, nearly half of all respondents use a shared data model to support autonomous operations, while almost 40% of those surveyed say their organization use a converged data model or application-centric data model.
